Greeks & Cypriots in the UK, 1815-2015: call for papers

A conference entitled "Greeks & Cypriots in the United Kingdom, 1815-2015: Culture, Commerce and Politics" will take place on Friday 14 October and Saturday 15 October 2016 at the Hellenic Centre, 16-18 Paddington Street, Marylebone, London W1U 5AS.

This research conference, the first dedicated to the subject, will mark the official inauguration of the Centre for Greek Diaspora Studies (CGDS) at Royal Holloway, University of London. Researchers interested in all aspects of the cultural, commercial and political history of the Greek and Cypriot communities in the United Kingdom from the early nineteenth century to the early twenty-first century are invited to submit proposals for presentations. Given the broad thematic and chronological context of the conference, papers could focus on specific topics related to emigration, integration, language, identity, family, gender, religion and faith, education, philanthropy, clubs and associations, literary figures, publishing, artists, art patronage, cultural experiences and representations, shipping, professional and commercial activity, entrepreneurialism, creative industries, involvement in national and local politics, service in World War I and World War II, etc. Proposals for 20-minute papers in the form of a Word document including the title of the presentation, an abstract approximately 300 words in length, a brief CV, and full contact details, should be submitted to the Organising Committee by Friday, 1 July 2016, at CGDSConference2016@rhul.ac.uk This is a joint event co-organised by the Hellenic Institute / CGDS at Royal Holloway, University of London, the Cyprus High Commission - Cultural Section and the Embassy of Greece, under the auspices of HE the High Commissioner for the Republic of Cyprus Mr Euripides L. Evriviades and HE the Ambassador of Greece Mr Konstantinos Bikas, with the support of the Hellenic Centre.
