"Freedom or Death": a commemoration of the Cretan uprising and the Arkadi holocaust of 1866

The Society for Modern Greek Studies and the Cretan Association of Great Britain are jointly organising a commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Arkadi holocaust. The event will take place in the Great Hall at King's College London, Strand, WC2R 2LS, at 7:00 pm on Thursday 24 November 2016.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the heroic defence of the Holy Monastery of Arkadi and the resulting holocaust of 8/9 (= 20/21) November 1866, which has ever since been regarded as a focal point of the Cretan struggle for freedom, and was closely followed at the time throughout Europe and especially in Britain.
