100 Years of Askitiki: The Centenary Conference

The conference, under the auspices of the Cambridge Centre for Greek Studies, takes place at Queens' College, Cambridge, on 30 June and 1 July 2023. The programme is now available (attached).

 The British School at Athens (BSA) and the National Library of Greece (NLG), with the generous support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), are organizing the international conference, Philhellenism and the Greek Revolution of 1821: Towards a Global History.

 

The conference will take place at the premises of the National Library of Greece in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Athens (SNFCC), during 15 – 17 March 2023.

Workshop in memory of Peter Mackridge: 21 October 2022

The Cambridge Centre for Greek Studies and the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics of the University of Cambridge present a workshop in memory of Peter Mackridge (1946-2022), Professor Emeritus of the University of Oxford, Emeritus Fellow of St Cross College, Oxford, and long-time collaborator.

The speakers are: Professor Roderick Beaton, Professor David Holton and Professor Ioanna Sitaridou.

The workshop takes place in the Bowett Room at Queens’ College, University of Cambridge on Friday 21st October 2022 starting at 4pm. It will also be livestreamed.

Launch of CENSUS of Modern Greek Literature

The launch of The CENSUS of Modern Greek Literature: a bibliography for the English-speaking world will take place online on Tuesday 5 April 2022, at 17.00 (UK).

The CENSUS is a significant international project that facilitates access to Greek literature for speakers of English by providing references to all English-language translations of modern Greek literature and to all studies in English that relate to modern Greek literature from the twelfth century AD to the present.

The event features the presentation of the CENSUS’s “Greek Authors 19th-21st centuries” section — the first to be made available on the website under Open Access. This initial section includes references to 800 Greek literary authors (approximately 7,000 entries). This most recent phase of the project was completed, with the support of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, through the collaboration of two ad hoc teams of researchers / fellowship recipients — in Boston and under the aegis of the Marilena Laskaridis Chair of Modern Greek Studies, University of Amsterdam.

At the event, Maria Boletsi, Endowed Professor, Marilena Laskaridis Chair of Modern Greek Studies, University of Amsterdam, will offer introductory remarks. The CENSUS website will be presented by Dia Philippides, Professor Emerita, Boston College (USA) and Ben Florin, Web Developer, Boston College Libraries.

The research project is directed by Dia Philippides, Professor Emerita, Boston College, in collaboration with Wim Bakker, Professor Emeritus, Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology, University of Amsterdam.

Workshop at the British School at Athens: The Greek language after Antiquity

A Workshop at the British School at Athens, 5-6 November 2021

This two-day workshop promises to be a landmark in the study of post-classical Greek. It rests on the achievements to date of five major projects in the history of the Greek language: the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae, the Vienna Lexikon zur byzantinischen Gräzität, the “Kriaras Lexicon” of Medieval Vernacular Greek, the Cambridge Grammar of Medieval and Early Modern Greek, and the Historical Lexicon of the Academy of Athens. Representatives of all these projects will participate in the workshop, together with experts in historical linguistics, dialectology, syntax and literary studies. The universities represented by the speakers include: Athens, Thessaloniki, the Aegean, Patras, Cyprus, Vienna, and California (Irvine). The Academic Committee consists of David Holton (University of Cambridge), Despina Chila-Markopoulou (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) and Angela Ralli (University of Patras).
